Personality:
Garnet has been the undisputed leader of the Crystal Gems since their former leader Rose Quartz gave up her physical form. She has worked hard to fill the role, often taking on additional responsibilities and solo missions. She is very protective of her teammates, often using her own physical strength and near invulnerability to shield the others from attacks. Garnet is very aware of how she comes across to others, and cultivates an image of herself that fits those expectations. In “So Many Birthdays” she explains to Amethyst she likes wearing a costume because ‘it makes her feel important, and she seems pleased when Steven candidly describes her as ‘mysterious’. She knows the others look to her for guidance, support, and stability, and accordingly does her best to hide any vulnerability she may have, as she confesses in “Friend Ship”.

When she is able to relax from her leadership role, Garnet is far more easy going and expressive. The best example of this being the flashback episodes “Story for Steven” and “We Need to Talk”, when Rose Quartz was still in charge and Garnet is visibly more relaxed. She often jokes with Steven, even coming up with the occasional one-liner during battles, and will frequently allow Amethyst and Steven to goof around or do something irresponsible so long as it’s harmless and doesn’t affect the team. She enjoys spending time with Steven and the other Crystal Gems, and while their missions always take priority she still tries to make time for Steven, knowing how important it is to him.

Garnet is a naturally taciturn person, the 'strong silent type' so to speak. She doesn’t mince words or beat around the bush, and is always straightforward in her discussions. Garnet is brutally honest and rarely says something she doesn’t genuinely believe, often in a very matter-of-fact tone. She often corrects others unprompted when they get facts mixed up, even small ones. Garnet is extremely confident in herself and prone to boasting. She’ll often take credit for ideas or successes even if the others contributed, and is sure to point out even her smallest victories. Garnet never holds back, whether it comes to fighting, arcade games, or volleyball.

While Garnet is intelligent, clever, and quick thinking, when it comes to solving problems she tends to take the straight-forward approach. She always tries the most direct route first when trying to solve problems, such as physically throwing Amethyst at the invading Red Eye rather than spend time looking for the weapon needed to destroy it in “Laser Light Cannon”. In general, her first instinct is to respond to problems physically, often violently. In “An Indirect Kiss” she lets off steam by punching a boulder through a thick barrier of vines. When she is unable to help Steven when he is rapidly ageing in "So Many Birthdays" she resorts to picking him up and aggressively shaking him, claiming "I thought violence would be the answer" when the others stop her. Garnet is able to prioritize tasks and always stays focused on the current mission, often bringing the team back on task when distractions arise. Garnet is willing to consider unorthodox plans when her methods don’t work, so long as they get the job done.

The other Crystal Gems look to her for solutions to their problems, and while her ability to predict the future usually allows her to come up with one, when she can’t things tend to break down quickly. Garnet is aware that her leadership hasn’t been perfect. In “Secret Team” she expresses frustration that her teammates can only work together because they’re scared of her reaction when they mess up, and in “Giant Woman” she asks Steven to ‘keep the harmony’ between Pearl and Amethyst. When Garnet makes a major mistake, she always takes responsibility for her actions and accepts the consequences. This is something she expects from her teammates as well, and is visibly disappointed when they don’t.

Despite constantly working to protect the Earth, Garnet has very little desire to connect with the humans around her. She hardly ever interacts with others outside the Crystal Gems, and when she does it is almost always because they are a friend of Steven. She has little to no concern about damage to property or the community and how it affects her neighbors, as seen in the episode ‘Beach Party’ where she completely ignored the owner of the local pizza shop whose roof she crashed into. Garnet admits she doesn’t care about what humans think of them (“We don’t do it for thanks”), and protects humanity more out of a sense of obligation than any real empathy. When she does take the time to get to know someone, she treats them with the same respect she gives the Crystal Gems, but because she is so reserved this happens rather infrequently.
